There are 10 degrees of Black Belt (10th Dan being a red belt and occasionally the founder of a particular style will wear a red belt to signify his level). At 5th degree black belt a red and white belt is awarded, as well as the title Shihan (Master Instructor). To receive a Shodan rank the applicant will take anywhere from 3 to 6 years depending on the participant. Normally the colored belt levels will take an average 3 to 6 months. A conditional Black Belt (black and white belt) will be awarded to those who have taken the shodan test but must fulfill requirements such as age. The belt colors are meant as incentive to carry on, therefore do not race through, learn it well.
